My second project led me to LIVE in Haiti. I was asked to be the foreman and over see training and construction. A project that would forever change the corse of my life. I made many friendships and connections. Sometime I wondered who was learning more? Language barriers, construction challenges are beyond what we know.
Through Extollo’s training program, local residents built the 15 structures that comprise this children’s village. The community includes 10 family-style orphan homes, a multi-purpose building, gazebo, water tower, guard-house and storage building. Off-the-grid utilities include water capture & filtration and solar power.
Each home houses 8-10 orphans and a caregiver, providing new hope to the 80 children previously living in unsafe and overcrowded conditions near downtown Anse-à-Galets.
Our completion date for this project was March 31, 2013. We moved over 80 excited Haitian orphans into their new home on April 2nd!
PROJECT RESULTS
67 men and women trained in construction
7,800 days of employment
25 people employed by new startups
20 people employed by business expansion
Over 1,000 family members impacted with food, clothing and education.
+ Many friendships
Even though I no longer work for Extollo, I believe in their cause and support them when I can. I am most proud of this project and what it continues to do for the people I trained and the children who benefit from the homes we build together.
